The different social groups within this opening sequence consist of the
following the female character with her gender and how this is portrayed. As
well as the police officer that is conveyed in the interview scenes, with the
social group of his job occupation and how this is constructed in the opening
sequence.
Police
officer:
Police
officers are commonly portrayed to people as ‘save the day’, hero’s, able to
confide in to, clever minded, always there to help and trustworthy. People such
as the audience, have this stereotype of the police officers. For example, when
looking at other films, such as ‘prisoners’ there is a police officer that is
focussed on throughout the opening sequence. The name of the police officer is
Detective Loki, this character is portrayed as ‘save the day’ and extremely
clever minded throughout the film. This is an example, of how they are
portrayed as well as how this character is shown throughout this specific film.
Unlike most
police officers, the police officer that is focussed on within the opening
sequence that I have created called ‘The Ritual’. The police officer that is
focussed on throughout the crosscutting is named Mark Stevenson. Mark
Stevenson, is a character that is completely different to how police officers
are visualised in the stereotypical way to people. The police officer,
throughout the opening sequence is portrayed as mischievous, devious, darkened,
evil like and labelled as the antagonist. The reason why we wanted to portray
the police officer in this form, was because we wanted to create a twist to the
narrative of the opening sequence. By portraying the police officer like this,
it makes the audience feel intrigued and nervous about what’s going to happen
next.
Personally I think that
constructing the police officer to be like this, was effective and a good idea
towards the project. By the police officer acting in the way he did throughout
the opening sequence, it made Mary Shaw the female character to look more
vulnerable and innocent like. The idea of the police officer, being viewed like
this is different to the stereotype and personally I think that it is more
effective to make the audience feel uncomfortable and considering that the
genre of the opening sequence is ‘thriller’ based.
We also focused on how the police man moved, we kept him
quite still with very little movement so that he would come across as
mysterious. His head was kept straight and he didn’t really move it. We he was
speaking to Mary and was trying to comfort her he didn’t move in close to make her
feel safe. If he didn’t move in to support her then it would of made him come
across as nice and friendly what we didn’t want. His facial expressions mainly
stayed the same and he didn’t give out any emotions. He could be described as ‘neutral’.
The lighting around the police man was really dark with low
key lighting. However there is a light that is on the right of him. This light empathises
his facial expressions and makes him come across as dark and ‘Evil like’. His
dark clothes also highlights how he isn’t pure and nice as you can’t really
make out what he is wearing as it is all black.
Girl
In most films the woman is stereotypically the innocent one.
For example in the film ‘I know who
killed me’ the actress Lindsay Loan plays the protagonist who is chased by a killer.
Within the film she is portrayed as innocent and defenceless. Most woman are
presented weak and not strong so like most films we decided to carry on the stereotype
of the way we present Mary.
Mary is young which makes her come across as weak and venerable,
we decided to use this and show her age through the use of hair and costume. We
made her wear a white top which makes her come across as pure and innocent. Her
hair is blond which communicates venerable. The she wore her clothes made her
look sophisticated and mature. This allows the audience to see that she isn’t a trouble maker, however it also makes her
look weak. This helps to make the audience feel sympathy for her. As she seems
to be an easy target.
Though the scene in the interview room Mary comes across as
though she trust the police man as she is open to him as she tells him everything,
as she trusts him. The fact that she is almost in tears allows the audience to see
that she feels that she can break down in front of him as she is comfortable.
The fact that she feels that she can trust him shows that she is In denial as she
thinks she is safe.
