Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms or conventions of real media products?

I found out from my target audience research that within a thriller film the conventions that are needed/expected include; tittles; music; low key lighting and close ups. We tried to make our work as professional as possible therefore included all of these.

Examples of when the conventions are used within a film are as follow; The Tittles are used at the start of the film to allow the audience know who is gonna be in the film. Music is used to help set the mood of the scene, the music allow can make the audience feel an emotion. Low key lighting is used to help make a character come across in a particular way. Close ups are used to allow the audience the chance to see an expression that an actor is using.

Examples of when there conventions have been previously used within an opening scene is as follow...

Music, this music makes you feel something, from peaceful to intense.

An example of what we used....

Close up, this close up makes you feel sorry for him.

An example of when we used a close up to make the audience to feel sorry for the victim...

Titles, how the titles can make the piece look mysterious.

An example of what we did...

We started the opening sequence with a black screen, so that the audience would have no idea of what they are looking at. Then we made the tittles of the cast and crew fade in and out. Like most thrillers we never started with a climax, as we let the first scene build up with tension. I think that this works more effective as some thriller films can be predictive of what you expect to happen, where as the audience had no idea about what was going to happen next. The use of the tittles fading in and out help made it come across as dark and mysterious. We then added the music that overlapped the talking. Like most films this helped create the atmosphere, develop the mood and set the scene. we tried to keep the stereotype of most films with fast paste music within a thriller film. However i think that are music was more effective then music that is used in most thrillers as the paste changed. Not just depending on how the up beat the scene is. Thriller films tend to include low key lighting, however i consider ours to be different as in the interview room there is only one source of light coming on to the police man. Therefor i consider it a step further than low key lighting. Every different type of film includes different types of shots, however within a thriller i consider a close-up to be one of the most important as it allows the audience the chance to see that actors face close up therefore they get to see the in depth expression that they are pulling.
